On the other hand, Holly and Tara tried to escape from Marnie but they are caught and the latter casts a spell on them that made them disappear on flame. US not coming to Philippines' aid vs China

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - The United States has said it will not side with any party in the Spratlys conflict, which is to say that the Philippines' most powerful ally will not be coming to its aid should its spat with China escalate into a shooting war.

The US Embassy made this clear in reaction to a Malacanang (the presidential palace) statement expressing confidence that Washington would honour its commitment under the two countries' Mutual Defence Treaty (MDT) to come to the aid of a beleaguered ally.

"The US does not take sides in regional territorial disputes," the US press attache Rebecca Thompson said in an e-mailed statement when contacted for comment to deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte's invoking of the 60-year-old MDT.

Thompson said the US was "troubled by incidents in the South China Sea in recent days that have raised tensions in the region" and that Washington opposes "the use or threat of force" by any of the countries with rival claims to the Spratly islands.

The brief statement said the US "shares a number of national interests with the international community in the South China Sea" but did not mention the Philippines or the two countries' over-a-hundred-year-old ties and mutual defence pact.

In an interview on state-run dzRB radio earlier on Saturday, Valte figured the Philippines could count on its superpower ally should the situation with China deteriorate because of the MDT.

"I haven't seen the terms of the MDT quite recently but I know that as an ally, the United States will help if ever it reaches that point because of the Mutual Defence Treaty," she said.

"Hopefully, it doesn't get to that point because, again, we are committed to the resolution of the issue in the most diplomatic and the most peaceful way possible," she added.

Armed Forces Chief General Eduardo Oban was also earlier quoted as saying that the military remained "hopeful that the Americans will not stand aside should the conflict erupt and that they can invoke the MDT with the US".

The MDT was signed on Aug 13, 1951, in Washington, DC with both parties declaring "publicly and formally their sense of unity and their common determination to defend themselves against external armed attack".

Under the eight articles of the treaty, both parties agree to aid and support each other in settling any international disputes by peaceful means, among others.

Sentor Francis Escudero said the Department of Foreign Affairs should be designated as the lead agency to talk about the Spratlys issue in public.

Avoid any mistakes

He said Malacanang should not do so through its spokespersons "in order to avoid any faux pas on our part".

Escudero said the government should also review the MDT to ascertain if US forces would indeed come to the rescue if the Philippines is attacked because of the Spratlys dispute.

He said Palace officials should carefully review the MDT, read through its fine print and get confirmations from the US government "if indeed this situation is covered".

But he remained optimistic that US military support would be given in case of an armed conflict as "a gesture of longstanding friendship".

Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said the House would leave it to the Department of Foreign Affairs assert the country's sovereignty claim over the West Philippine Sea.

"The DFA is articulating our position and we're supporting it," he said.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Commodore Miguel Rodriguez said the AFP leaves it to the DFA to make an official comment on the developments in the Spratlys issue.

Not joining Viet Nam

"We submit our reports to the DFA and the DFA crafts the country's position on KIG [Kalayaan Island Group] affairs," he said, referring to the portion of the Spratlys claimed by the Philippines.

He also said the military was not joining Viet Nam, another Spratlys claimant, in the deepening rift with China over the issue.

"We are not looking at partnering with one country against another country," he said.

At a Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Independence Day dinner Saturday night, President Aquino came face to face with Chinese Ambassador Liu Jiangchao who only a few days ago had warned claimant states to stop exploring for oil in the Spratlys.

"Like all neighbours, I know we may have our disagreements sometimes," Aquino said in his speech, acknowledging Liu's presence.

"(But) no one can deny the benefits our relationship has brought to both our countries throughout the years," he added.

Liu adverted to "incidents" that have arisen between the two countries since Aquino came to power.

"But facts have manifested we are stronger than these tests," he said.

Liu said the August 23 botched hostage crisis involving Hong Kong tourists had been settled with a "loving and understanding heart".

"The last thing the Chinese government and people want to see is that the [Spratlys] dispute stands in the way of the progress of our wonderful relations and the friendship and brotherhood of our two peoples," Liu said, who hinted at a visit to China from Aquino later this year.

In the past two weeks, the Philippines has accused China of making at least six incursions into Philippine territory in the past four months, a charge that Beijing has dismissed as rumors.

'Green Lantern' enlisting local fans for promotional event

Watch Green Lantern Online - The locally shot super-budget superhero spectacle "Green Lantern" doesn't open until 12:01 a.m. on June 17, but fans of the ring-wearing superhero in New Orleans and 10 other cities will be able to get an early taste of the film next week.

Ryan Reynolds strikes a heroic pose in an image from 'Green Lantern,' the locally shot superhero film that opens Friday (June 17). On Monday, Warner Bros. will hold a special 'Join the Corps' event where locals can get a chance to win prizes including tickets to the film's local premiere.

Warner Bros. Pictures this week announced plans for a "Join the Corps" promotion that will invite fans to deciper a clue leading them to a secret local location on Monday (June 13) where the Green Lantern Corps symbol will be projected from dusk until midnight.

Those who find it will get a chance to win prizes including T-shirts, "Green Lantern" rings, "Green Lantern: Emerald Knights" DVDs and - perhaps best of all - tickets to an advance screening of the film on Tuesday night at the AMC Elmwood Palace.

The local clue will be broadcast Monday on WRKN 92.3 FM to help fans identify the secret location. The first 100 fans to arrive at the secret location will receive passes to the local advance screening, two days before the film's nationwide theatrical release.

Have you guys imagined to be the saviour of the entire universe? Well, of course, most of you will answer yes, and even me, I have the same answer for each of us dreamt of being a superhero. In this vast universe, it was really hard to made an identity especially to be recognize by everyone. But a simple young man who was given a responsibility to save the world and maintain the balance of power in the universe attempt to create his identity. I was talking about Hal Jordan, a human who was choosen to save the Earth and the entire Universe against a rising power of evil forces lead by a creature called Parallax. This characters and creatures that I was telling you guys, were part of the upcoming movie from the Warner Bros. Green Lantern. On which, it is based on the DC comics, and it stars hunky actor Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. To watch Green Lantern this coming June 17, 2011 is the best way to witness a new creation from Martin Campbell.

Green Lantern story runs on, when the peace in the universe has been threaten by a certain evil force called Parallax. And the protectors of peace and justice has been worried and start to fight against him. This protectors is just tiny but a powerful force existing in the universe to preserve and promote peace and justice among race. This intergalactic force is called Green Lantern and consists of different types of race from every corner of the universe. Well, let's back to Parallax he threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, and the fate of the Green Lantern Corps and the Earth lies in the hand of the newest recruit member, which is also the first human in the intergalactic force, it is Hal Jordan. But the Green Lanterns showed little respect for the human and the no human had ever harnessed the power of the ring that the Green Lantern uses to defeat their enemy. However, Hal childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris will help him by encouragement and that the own strength of Hal lies in his will power and strong determination. It was his imagination who will awake the power of the ring and enable him to prove that he is not the key to defeat Parallax but also become the greatest Green Lantern ever exist.

It was almost three months since the favorite liars of the world leave the television, and now they're returning for more secrets is waiting to be revealed. Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin, Spencer Hastings and Emily Fields is coming back for the season 2 of the phenomenal all girl, dramatic and romantic tv show from ABC Family. Based on the popular novel series of sara Shepard, now it had reached it second season which is set to air this coming June 14, 2011. If we can still remember, the season finale of the first series got 2.87 millions of viewers. It only proves, that PLL is really an amazing show, plus, in 2010 it had won three awards from three different categories from Teen Choice Award. Then, they had recently nominated on People's Choice Awards for Favorite TV Obsession and Outstanding Drama Series on GLAAD Media Awards. It only proves that Pretty Little Liars is doing good, despite that it was still on it's starting point.

The purple is a good look, how was that getting used to?

Mark Strong: Thank you very much. I saw the whole process happening so I was amazed. What was really freaky was when I Skyped my wife and kids looking like it, that was an event (laughs). It was a shock for them. Everyday I would Skype her and say, “Hi, it’s your alien husband here.” It really freaked her out. My kids are six and three and a half, they’re used to the idea that Dad does strange stuff now.

How Green Lantern savvy were you before going into all of this?

Mark Strong: Not very. In England you don’t really have…you can get a hold of DC and Marvel comics but they weren’t part of the culture like they are in the US. We’ve got different kinds of comics, strange British comics like Beano and Whizzer and Chips, they were very child friendly rather than kind of adventuretastic like Green Lantern or Superman or Batman. I wasn’t really that aware at all to be honest.

I got into it though, they say education is wasted on the young, as a grown up getting into it I found it totally riveting. Jeff and Adam at DC sent me some books and I worked my way through them, it’s a rich heritage of source material. I kind of weirdly got addicted.

Seeing as Green Lantern already has such a huge following in the comic-book world, what was it like as an actor to take something on like this?

Mark Strong: I felt a responsibility to get it right. If people adore this stuff and have known it for years and years it is beholden to you to deliver what they’re hoping. I know if I read a book and go see the movie I’m always hoping they will do it justice. That was something I was very serious about. The look of Sinestro, I tried very hard to make sure that he would match what he looked like in the comics rather than take him in a different direction, which was muted at first. I did feel a responsibility to the fans.

Doing this blue screen stuff with Sinestro, that must be like using a different acting muscle. When you’re doing that how do use your imagination to go where you need to go?

Mark Strong: It’s not actually that dissimilar to theatre. If you’re on stage and you look out and point , “Look at the huge forest,” you just have to use your imagination, you have to create it in the minds of the audience. Really it’s the same thing. You have to use your imagination to imagine all of this. It’s much easier on a set because you can have a pre-visualisation of animation that helps you out, or you can have the artwork there, which tells you the environment you’re in. Essentially it’s just using your imagination.

What was the makeup process? How long did that take?

Mark Strong: The first time we tried it, it was like eight hours or something, but we got it down to about four hours. The fastest we ever did it was three hours. There was a series of prosthetics, then different passes with an air brush of different colours.

You’ve gotta have patience.

Mark Strong: Yeah (laughs), a long time in the chair, you get to know the special effects and make-up guys very well indeed (laughs).

Ryan Reynolds was great, why do you think he made such a good Green Lantern?

Mark Strong: Because he can just do everything that is required. I think he said somewhere, I don’t want to take words out of his mouth, but I think he said he can throw a punch and kiss the girl. That’s kind of what’s required. He does that really well. He’s also very funny, vulnerable, I think as an actor he rounds out that character of Hal Jordan. He’s also handsome and buff, everything you need from a leading man.

You were also pretty muscled up in this.

Mark Strong: Thank you very much, I worked out for it, they drew me extra muscles as well which is always welcomed (laughs). If we could live in the world of film it’d be perfect.

Ryan is a very gentle soul, he’s very approachable, I got on with him very well. I think what I like most of all is that he can bring his natural humour to it and just turn a scene on a six pence. One minute he’d be very serious, then he’d say something that would just lighten the mood and make everybody laugh. He’s very good at judging the right moment.

There’s some great fight scene’s, the one you’re involved in with the swords is one that stands out.

Mark Strong: Originally in that scene we weren’t even going to touch each other, we were gonna do it all with our imaginations or through the ring, we were going to create these constructs and fight each other. But ultimately we would have stood there doing very little, we realised it would be better if there was some contact, so we did have to rehearse the fight scene, we did get physical with each other. It was quite strange holding these constructs that weren’t actually there, again you had to use your imagination in the fight. Normally a fight is avoiding physical contact, this was a combination of the traditional fight, but also using weapons you didn’t really have. It was interesting.

How was it doing the flying scenes?

Mark Strong: Well I turned up early in order to learn how to do that with the rigs. In the old days if you flew, somebody would just be literally holding onto a rope and you’d hope they would land you in the right way (laughs). These days it’s all done by computers, so once you find your stop point, you can have the confidence that you know the minute you land the computer and wiring will stop, so you can look like you’re proficient at taking off and landing, much more than you used to be able to in the old days. Also flying itself, there was a rig that had six different points that you were attached to that could make you vertical and move you any which way you wanted. That was fun.

Call it an alien hybrid mash-up of 'E.T.' meets 'Stand by Me.' Too bad it's not as good as either of those two classics. Time to phone home, J.J. and Steven.

Watch Super 8 Online - The poster for the new movie "Super 8" is dominated not by an image but by two equally prominent names: writer-director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg. Hybrids may be all the rage for cars, but this melding of two cinematic sensibilities, though effective at moments, is finally not as exciting or involving as it we'd like it to be.

The story of what happens when half a dozen middle-school kids set out to make a student film in 1979 Ohio and end up enmeshed in something much bigger and scarier, "Super 8" does not lack for potent elements. Its two lead teens have a fine on-screen chemistry, and all the film's big action sequences are faultlessly executed.

But "Super 8's" elements do not jell into a satisfying whole. Though the directors have been personally close for decades — they first connected when Spielberg hired the then-15-year-old Abrams to restore his own 8mm films — their styles do not necessarily mesh. It's a dissonance that's prefigured when the logos of their production companies — Abrams' cranky Bad Robot and Spielberg's lyrical Amblin — spiritually clash on-screen.

Old-fashioned and genteelly entertaining, even wholesome, "Super 8" plays more like a family film than a kinetic work by Abrams, best known on the big screen for such high energy items as "Mission: Impossible III" and the latest "Star Trek." A longtime admirer of Spielberg, Abrams has made something more in that director's style than his own, an action that has diminished his own effectiveness without replicating what makes the best of Spielberg's films so successful.

You only have to compare "Super 8" (unfairly perhaps, but inevitably) to the Spielberg film it most resembles, the impeccably entertaining "E.T.," to see the ways the earlier movie felt fresh and inventive while the new one has the aura of stuff we've already seen.

Very much like Rob Reiner's "Stand by Me," "Super 8" lives and dies by having those six 14-year-old kids as a group protagonist. Like teenagers everywhere, they provide both frustration and pleasure.

The frustration, unfortunately, comes first, as we meet the boys as an undifferentiated group, gathered together at a wake for the mother of one of their number, Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney), who has died in a steel mill accident in the blue collar town of Lillian, Ohio.

The puerile way these boys interact with each other is standard issue teen behavior, more calculated than involving. Only the fact that they're the core of a gang of kids we eventually see gathering at midnight to shoot a Super 8 short at the local train station gives them any interest at all.

That film's director, Joe's best friend, Charles (an effective Riley Griffiths), intends his zombie thriller for the rarefied precincts of the Cleveland International Super 8 Film Festival. To up the film's emotional quotient, Charles asks attractive blond classmate Alice (Elle Fanning) to be in the movie, not realizing that she is the girl of young Joe's dreams.

If the film has an unexpected strength, it is the performances of both Fanning and Courtney as Alice and Joe, kids who manage to be sweet and natural both together and apart. While Fanning is a known quantity after films such as Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere," Courtney does exceptional work for someone who has never acted professionally before.

Most of "Super 8," however, has other things on its mind, starting with a truly spectacular train crash that happens right in front of that Super 8 camera because of director Charles' never-ending quest for "production value" for his midnight short.

Something unseen escapes from that train, and before you know it, all kinds of strange and mysterious happenings traumatize the town. Not the least of these is the arrival of a contingent of all-business Air Force troops led by the surly Col. Nelec (Noah Emmerich), whose brusque behavior irritates the town's deputy sheriff, Jackson Lamb ("Friday Night Lights'" Kyle Chandler), who also happens to be Joe's father.

All of this is very professionally done, though nothing if not overly familiar. It must have been satisfying for both individuals to relive their youthful 8mm moviemaking days, and to create the kind of story they would have loved to have told back in the day, but none of that necessarily creates value for an audience.

The problem with "Super 8" is not how much there is to complain about but how little there is to be excited about. Given the abilities of those accomplished names on the poster, that has got to be a disappointment.

'Judy Moody' a summer slippery slide of halfway there

Watch Judy Moody Movie Online - While Judy Moody seems like a nice enough kid, her summer adventures hold marginal appeal for all ages. They are more fantastical than fascinating, more snicker-inducing than charming. And that only if your laugh standards are reduced for the summer.

"Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer" is based on Megan McDonald's best-selling book series for the tween set. The story covers the title character, a likable and personality-fueled youngster who is planning on the summer of all summers with her close clique of good friends, including a contest involving accumulation of points for traditional summer-thrill experiences.

When it's revealed that most of Judy's friends are leaving town for the summer, and her parents are taking a long road trip, she is indeed bummed, especially because it means more time with her nuisance brother Stink, and another boy who seems least interesting to the sometimes persnickety Judy.

From the emotional rubble, though, arrives unexpected magic in the form of Judy's charismatic Aunt Opal, played by Heather Graham. Opal is one of those wacky storybook aunts who fits the bill of eccentric, a sort of modern hippie and free spirit whose fun behavior ranges between mega-charming and vaguely psychotic.

Buying into the strangeness, Judy embarks on a wild trip of a summer with Opal, a summer wherein Judy must often play the role of adult, adventures lurk everywhere, and Judy uses experience to learn the true value of family and friendship.

It's all done in pinwheel colors and forever cheery tones, with little depth, some vomit and animal scat, and only the occasional rings-true funny gag. Jordanna Beatty has a sort of off-kilter charm and humor that make her neither too perfect or too annoying as Judy. She's amiable enough to get us through the slow spots. Likewise, Graham makes the best of eccentricity, and at least when the story inevitably slows for the predictable second-half mayhem, there are those bright colors to distract us.

Children will likely recognize "Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer" as middling, escapist entertainment, as they have seen enough good stuff ---- Pixar and Harry Potter movies ---- to make sound judgments. The movie is what it is, not a total bummer but neither very close to sunny perfection.
